Overview of the Heartland Workforce Region

- The unemployment rate in the Heartland Workforce region (Desoto, Hardee, and Highlands Counties) was 8.4 percent in February 2012. This was a decrease of 1.5 percentage points from the region's year ago rate. In February 2012, the region's unemployment rate was 0.7 percentage point below the state rate of 9.1 percent. Out of a labor force of 73,929, there were 6,212 unemployed region residents.
- Employment by industry in the Heartland Workforce region totaled 39,947 in September 2011 (the latest available data). Industry employment increased by 2.4 percent over the year, compared to an increase of 1.7 percent for the state.
- The Heartland Workforce region gained 939 jobs over the year. Industries gaining jobs over the year were natural resources and mining (+771 jobs); education and health services (+304 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+155 jobs); professional and business services (+49 jobs); and manufacturing (+25 jobs). The greatest job losses were posted by: government (-228 jobs); other services (-58 jobs); construction (-25 jobs); information (-24 jobs); financial activities (-20 jobs); and leisure and hospitality (-14 jobs).
- The annual job growth rate for natural resources and mining (+17.1 percent); education and health services (+4.3 percent); manufacturing (+2.2 percent); and professional and business services (+1.7 percent) exceeded that of the state.
